Winona is a member of the Fisher River Cree First Nation (Manitoba) though her family hails from George Gordon's First Nation in Saskatchewan. A lifelong student of Indigenous histories, anti-colonial theory, Treaty Rights, and Traditional Indigenous Knowledge, Winona has been teaching and publishing Indigenous Studies since 1988.
